While it is only a week since the team was testing at this track, which is the home of the Italian Grand Prix, conditions seem to have changed so analysing the data will be very important.

German Heidfeld, 30, will enter his third campaign with the team while Polish driver Kubica, 22, has been rewarded with a second full season.

kubica_83.jpgMUNICH, Germany (AFP) - BMW-Sauber driver Nick Heidfeld ended speculation of a possible transfer by signing a two-year contract extension on Tuesday which will keep him with the German team until 2009.

The team also said they were retaining Polish driver Robert Kubica, who survived an horrific crash in Montreal in June.

kubica_82.jpgLONDON (Reuters) - Germany’s Nick Heidfeld and Poland’s Robert Kubica will continue as BMW Sauber drivers next year, the Formula One team said on Tuesday.

“Both Nick and Robert have delivered very strong performances in the course of this season,” said team boss Mario Theissen in a statement before this weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul.

kubica_79.jpgRobert Kubica has said that he is hoping the Turkish Grand Prix will be kinder to him - and the BMW Sauber team next weekend, after last year’s event turned out to be one to forget.

Speaking ahead of the twelfth round in the 2007 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, Kubica added though that while he might not done that well last year, only finishing twelfth after tyre issues cost him considerable time in his second stint, he was still none-the-less won over by the track, which he rates very highly.

kubica_78.jpgRobert Kubica topped the practice timesheets for the first time this season ahead of Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix. The opening 90-minute session conjured up a surprise, with BMW Sauber driver Kubica leading the way ahead of the Ferraris and McLarens.

With all the talk in Formula One currently surrounding the bitter off-track battle between those two teams, it was a relief for the sport to finally get back to actual racing.
