Kubica return for 2012?
Poland´s first and only Formula One driver, Robert Kubica, says he wants to get back to racing for the Lotus Renault team nex year, while his recovery from the injuries sustained under a high-speed crash at a rally event in Italy February 6th, continues.
Kubica joined a Q&A session on the team´s website, and the many questions from the fans were mostly if Kubica would return to racing next year. And if he would be fighting for the championship when he did come back.
“Yes to the first question,” he responded. “For your second question, we will have to wait until the first test in 2012!”
Kubica suffered a almost severed hand, a broken shoulder and a smashed leg, but the main focus for the doctors in Italy, where Kubica were flown to immediately, was to save the dexterity of his fingers and the use of his hand. Without that, his career would be over. The progress was painful and at first slow, but then the rehabilitation really began and the doctors have said Kubica´s progress is ‘staggering’.
“Mentally, no problem at all,” he continued. “Physically, I am still a bit weak but my general condition is quite good. My weight has now returned to its normal level and for a few weeks I’ve been able to walk without help. All in all I feel pretty well.
“I am satisfied with how things are proceeding. The improvement is in line with the expectations, and luckily there are no complications that could affect the recovery time. It is still too early to have a clear picture for the timing of my return but the important thing is the final outcome not the hurry.”
Kubica have been rumoured to make an appearance at the season finale in Brazil, his best result was in 2009 for BMW Sauber, where he picked up second place, and it is believed that Renault is having the car standing by for him at the race, should he decide he is fit enough. Otherwise it´ll be replacement Nick Heidfeld who will take the wheel, as he have done all year.
“I like to have a goal when it’s a reasonable one. We’ll see how the next few months go in terms of the rehabilitation process evolution and then we’ll take a decision in due time,” said Kubica. “What is important is that I know that my team is keeping my seat for whenever I need it.
“The good news is that my recovery is consistent and sooner or later I will feel sufficiently fit to be able to put a date on when I’ll be back.”
